Katherine Sonnekus has been awarded the Runner Up at the 2015 McDonalds Senior Ballet Scholarship, being the outright female winner of this prestigious competition. Only eight finalists were selected to perform on the Sydney Opera House stage last night, out of over 170 competitors. The five females and three males each performed a classical and a contemporary solo variation in front of notable judges, having previously been assessed in two classes and two performances of their solo variations.

Katherine moved to Sydney from her home in Auckland New Zealand to begin training at the Tanya Pearson Classical Coaching Academy in Sydney this year, and is studying under the tutelage of former Australian Ballet principal ballerina Lucinda Dunn OAM.

She completed her RAD grades and vocational exams with distinction while studying with Heather and Melinda Palmer at the Mount Eden Ballet Academy in Auckland.

In 2015 Katherine was a semi-finalist in the Alana Haines Awards and was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Danish Ballet Summer School.

In 2013 she won the national Sir John Logan Campbell Trust Award at the Auckland Caledonian Dancing Competition.
